About ULEAD
There is a critical need for urban youth to have working knowledge of the legal and civic nuances of their
communities and how it affects their daily lives. The pressing problems of the daily existence that these
students face inhibit them from utilizing an understanding to exhibit appropriate behavior and engage in
civil dialogue. ULEAD proposes to provide these students with the knowledge and function of the legal
and civic processes that will facilitate their ability to problem-solve which will allow them to maximize
opportunities to exercise social and political agency. Through hands-on, interactive and problem-based
curricula, ULEAD intends to show our youth the positive and productive ways to engage their
communities and respond in socially acceptable ways to modulate the forces that they identify as unjust.
ULEAD includes offering young minds pathways to character development through first-hand involvement
with law enforcement, judicial and government systems. For example, ride-alongs with police officers,
visits to the municipal courts, along with one on one conversations with judges and attorneys will enhance
their knowledge from a firsthand perspective.
